Hawaii provides public rental housing to low income, primarily elderly, residents. Public Rental Housing: Project Based provides project-based rent subsidies in 17 rental projects. As of October 2012, 864 low income households' rents subsidized by the agency.
The program was funded by an initial legislative appropriation into the Rental Assistance Revolving Fund. For FY16, the legislature funded the program at $3 million.
