Through the Building Homes Rhode Island Program, the Housing Resources Commission of Rhode Island offers financing to affordable housing developers for the development of rental housing projects. Between 2006 and 2011, over 1,200 apartments were constructed across 110 projects. Of the 1,255 units constructed, 1,002 were rental.
In 2006, the State of Rhode Island approved a $50 million state bond to launch the Building Homes Program. In 2012, the voters in Rhode Island approved a new resolution allowing the state of Rhode Island to issue a new bond, in an amount to not exceed $25 million to further fund the program.In 2016, Rhode Island voters will be asked to recapitalize the program with a $50 million state bond.
